It was a quiet Friday evening in August in the little hamlet of Franklin, Maine. Folks had either gone to bed or were sitting on their screened porches, enjoying the sound of frustrated mosquitos in the soft summer night air. Suddenly, around 9:05 PM - WHAM!!! A car barrelling down the Georges Pond Road ran the stop sign, went airborne, and crashed through the back wall of the big hall at the Veterans Club. The occupants fled the scene, but were later apprehended. Despite the damage, the plucky members of the Franklin Historical Society held their annual Blueberry Pancake Breakfast in the hall as scheduled the next morning.
