Tugwassah was a Native American who lived in these parts some two hundred
years ago, during the late 1700's and early 1800's. Information is sketchy,
although some written accounts do exist, but most of the knowledge has
been passed down by word of mouth. The best first hand account was related
by Moses Abbott in 1898 when he stated in a local newspaper, the Ellsworth
American, that, 'I remember Tugwassah, the old Indian Chief," and
"he died many years ago and is buried on Butler's Point."'. - blatantly
