Tugwassah

Tugwassah was a Native American who lived in these parts some two hundred years ago, during the late 1700's and early 1800's. Information is sketchy, although some written accounts do exist, but most of the knowledge has been passed down by word of mouth. The best first hand account was related by Moses Abbott in 1898 when he stated in a local newspaper, the Ellsworth American, that,  'I remember Tugwassah, the old Indian Chief," and "he died many years ago and is buried on Butler's Point."'.  - blatantly stolen from "Oblivion and Dead Relatives Downeast" by Bruce Carter.
