This Indian Princess Gold Dollar was new in 1854, replacing
the Liberty Head Gold Dollar introduced in 1849. I think it's a great looking
coin, don't you? Well, of course, the U. S. Mint couldn't leave well enough
alone. I think they felt it was too sexy for the times
- remember, women (wait!, men too) in the 1860's all dressed in black. They
replaced it in 1856 with THIS ABOMINATION.
In 1861, this coin would buy $18.94 worth of goods in today's money
.
