The 36 Star Flag .    1865 - 1867     Hmmm. It's July 5, 1865 and the evidence would suggest that Franklin has fallen off the wagon. It's gotta be those dang Civil  War Veterans bringing their newly acquired ways of the world  back to their home town.  Our womenfolk are not at all amused  by this behavior and my guess is that they'll do something about  it  soon.  The new star is for the addition of Nevada to the Union and this flag will fly for two years. Let's take a look at what's happening in the United States and the rest of the world.......

In 1865 - 1867 in the United States and the world:

•     Andrew Johnson is President.
  

•   1866

•  The Italians, French, Austrians, and Prussians are mixing it up in Europe .
•  Not to be outdone by Tolstoi's "War and Peace", Dostoevsky writes " Crime and Punishment ".
•  French alleged artist Monet starts the impressionist (artists with poor eyesight) movement by painting  his wife " Camille ", over and over and over..........
•   Alfred Nobel invents dynamite.
•   Robert Whitehead invents the underwater torpedo.

• Napolean III pulls the rug out from under Emperor Maximillian of Mexico. French troops leave Mexico and Maximillian is executed. Read all about it !
• The Fenians (you have to click that link) provide the impetus for the British government to establish the Dominion of Canada.   Click on Sgt. Beaver, RCMP, for more info!
• Who was Seward and what was his " folly "?
• Cézanne , another French challenge for Lenscrafters,  paints "Rape".
• Madame Curie is born, except then she was known as Marie .
• Michael Faraday dies.
• Pierre Michaux begins to manufacture velocipedes .
• The railroad makes it through the Brenner Pass .
• Diamonds are discovered in South Africa.

•   Samuel Cony is Governor until 1867.
•  Civil War hero Joshua L. Chamberlain becomes Governor in 1867.

• Ships built and launched in Franklin:
• Nellie Ware, 249 ton brig
• M. C. Moseley, 199 ton schooner
• M. M. Pote, 149 ton schooner
• Cuba, 473 ton bark - It's a big 'un!
  

•  1867
• Selectmen are John West, William W. Bragdon, and O. Calvin Donnell. 
• Schooner J. P. Wyman , 165 tons, built and launched.
• The town votes 30-14 for the "Suppression of Drinking Houses and Tiffling Shops".
