Mary Marshall Using Her Head

The Franklin Women's Club still runs the library after all these 68 years. Here's Joyce Fernald, President of the FWC on duty.

The State of the Library

Ok, so it's old, publicly funded, and crooked (as in out of plumb). The building needs quite a bit of work and, since it's so old, it will always need quite a bit of work. It has the worst kind of heating system imaginable in Maine - electric baseboard. In the spring and fall, when it gets chilly, the librarians on duty would rather freeze their... well, let's just say that they are really reluctant to turn on the heat because it costs so much. High on the wish list is an oil heating system so that the library can remain open during the winter months. This of course depends on two things:
  1. Will the year round residents of Franklin use the library in the winter?
  2. Can the library raise enough cash to make it happen?
The bottom line is that the library needs some help from the folks and friends of Franklin.

Here's How You Can Help
...........

  • Visit the library in person and use it! There's really an astonishingly nice facility inside that weather beaten old exterior. It's bigger than you would imagine and the selection of books is excellent.
  • Send money.
  • Get rid of your kids for awhile at the library. It's free! And they have scads of children's books. Lisa Herrington's Children's Story Hour is VERY popular.
  • Send money.
  • Attend the Book Sale and buy a book !
  • Send money.
  • Donate books to the library. This is a tax deductible donation. Remember, if you donate books, the library reserves the right to sell them for cash, which they will do if they already have a copy.
  • Send money - really! The best way we can help is to give the library a cash donation.
